Pedestrian bell tower
It's the bell tower of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the symbol of Pisa and known worldwide primarily for its tilt; in fact, it's also called the Leaning Tower.
Its height is approximately 57 meters and it was built over two centuries, without ever altering the original design. Only five years after the first stone was laid, the ground sank, causing it to incline; however, after several interruptions, construction continued over the following decades, applying techniques that were perfected to compensate for the incline.
In the 1990s, consolidation work was necessary to reduce its increasingly pronounced tilt, and measures were taken to keep the tower safe and open to visitors. Furthermore, in recent years, cleaning and complete consolidation of the marble components have been carried out, thus restoring the monument to its former splendor.
